Rev'd John Benson

BSc, DipHE, DFM

Rector

I was born in Bristol in 1951. My father was in the Navy and so I lived in several places including Hong Kong and Gibraltar, settling eventually in Hartley. I spent most of my secondary education at King's School, Rochester. I then went on to read Forestry at Bangor University where I met my future wife, Pat. We married shortly after graduation and went to live in Zambia where I worked for the Forest Department in Kitwe and Pat taught at a boys' school.

After returning to England, we settled in Devon where I taught at a Girls' Grammar School and later worked as a dairy farm manager, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Then, much to my surprise, I became a Christian, and soon felt called to the Anglican Ministry and was ordained in Exeter in 1985, after training at Trinity College, Bristol.

Since then I have served in several parishes in the West Country, notably Stoke Damerel, Devonport, the Torridge Team Ministry and for fourteen years at Newport and Bishops Tawton in Barnstaple. Pat and I have three children, Ben, David and Elizabeth.
