Lent Course 2005

The Power of Small Choices - Two great films to guide us through Lent

Our Lent Course this year is based on two films and looks to be quite interesting. There will be seven meetings in all, two of which will be to see the films.

The first meeting will be a viewing of "The Shawshank Redemption" which is set in the bleak situation of life imprisonment. It's a story of hope and determination overcoming fear. It includes some scenes of violence and the sort of strong language you would expect prisoners to use. I know that some people prefer not to watch this sort of material, but hope that you will be able to take courage and bear with it. Neither violence nor language is gratuitous, but necessary to a realistic portrayal, and I think that you will discover that what comes from the story is overwhelmingly positive.

The second meeting will be a viewing of "Babette's Feast" And this, by contrast is a very gentle and somewhat slow film set in a remote island community in Denmark. It is subtitled. It tells the story of two aging sisters, daughters of a pastor, who have refused marriage in order to carry on their father's work among his dwindling flock. Into their midst comes Babette, a penniless refugee from the French Revolution, and the story tells what happens when she comes into a little money and decides to throw a feast. (It is incidentally the Archbishop of Canterbury's favourite film!)

It is possible to take part in the course without having seen the films, but it is not recommended.

Following this the real work begins (!) and there will be 5 sessions as listed below...

  • The choice of observation
  • The choice of limitation
  • The choice of imagination
  • The choice of determination
  • The choice of affirmation

During our discussion sessions we will look at clips from the films, discuss them and see how they are reflected in passages from the Bible. Our Lent courses in the past have all been very different and have challenged the way we look at our Christian lives. We hope that this too will provide us with further insights while enjoying two very different films and the companionship of our friends.
