The Churchyard at St Margaret's is looking much smarter these days now that we have replaced the old paths with new brick edged ones dressed with shingle. It has taken us almost two years to obtain permission from the diocese to renew the paths as the regulations regarding churchyards are both detailed and stringent. However, the Bishop saw them at the Confirmation Service last Sunday, and apparently he approved of them.
We had several reasons for renewing the paths, not least of which was the amount of times spent each year preventing the weeds from encroaching any further through the broken edges. Some of the paths dated from 1897 and the rest were last repaired in the 1920s. The footpath to the new part of the churchyard was always very muddy in wet weather, and consequently very slippery, to say nothing of the consequences for footwear of mourners at funerals, who have already said how much they appreciate the improvement. Finally the kind people who clean the church are also grateful, as mud from the churchyard was constantly trampled into the church despite the use of the doormat in the porch. Hopefully these paths will last as long as the old ones did.
The Parochial Church Council would like to thanks Halstead Parish Council and Shoreham Parish Council for their generous contributions to the cost of the paths. We are also very grateful to the Committee of Badgers Mount Memorial Hall who gave us a large donation. We were also able to use a legacy from a relative in Australia of Mrs Giles, who is buried in the churchyard, and who specified that it was to be used for churchyard maintenance. Without all this help it would probably have taken us many more years to be able to afford the work, the cost of which was rising steadily. Thank you, all of you.
