Sunday 1st February 2004
We were delighted to welcome the Venerable Clive Mansell - Archdeacon of Tonbridge - to St. Margaret's on 1st February to preach the sermon and to dedicate the new Rectors' board. The celebration of Candlemas also took place with a procession coming to a halt at the board for its unveiling and dedication. The church was full and the choir in good voice. We welcomed back the Rev. John Whitehead (whose name is on the board) and his wife Barbara who both seemed delighted to visit Halstead again. Ruth Flagg also attended the service although David was taking a service elsewhere - and Malcolm Bury was in Mombassa! Most of the people who sponsored a Rector were able to be present at the service and stayed on to enjoy sherry and refreshments afterwards - and a chat!
If you have not already visited St Margaret's to view the board, we hope you will do so when the opportunity arises. A spotlight can be switched on which shows up the heraldic shields of Canterbury and Rochester to great effect, as well as the names in gold leaf of the rectors back to 1282. We are grateful to Craig Pennygar for his craftsmanship of the board, and once again to all the sponsors.
Before too long we hope to have a leaflet available in St Margaret's which will give the history of the present Victorian church, as well as that of the demolished church across the road, parts of which dated back to Saxon times. Not only do we have to maintain our current church in good order, but we have to consider the best way of conserving in a safe and pleasing manner what remains of the former church.
